Creating Emotion: Through Camera Movements

Image
List of angles, shots and camera movements I will try to incorporate in my documentary: Note: Recently updated this post with this picture! Camera Angles: Eye level – camera points straight ahead. Intention is to be objective. Low angle – camera points up from a lower angle. It makes the subject dominating. High angle – camera points down from a higher angle. It makes the subject diminutive. A variation: Top angle or bird’s eye view – special case when you want to show the topography of a location. Aerial shots fall under this. Dutch – tilted angle. It draws attention to the fact it’s not a balanced frame. Something is literally off kilter. Over the shoulder (OTS) – not strictly an angle, but it’s a specialized shot that deserves its own place. Confrontational by nature. Shot Sizes Close up – facial features and expression is more important than anything else. Variation: Extreme close up – you probably want to chop something off for an even closer look. L...

How I imagine my documentary

I will note down a few points, showing you how I imagine my documentary: Choose a worthwhile topic: Now the thing is I've always wanted to represent my society whenever I got a chance to do so. I feel this is the perfect opportunity. I want to represent people of my community, and how they're doing in their daily lives. So, I plan on making the film colourful, short and worth watching. How? the magic is editing. I'll try and bring it to life.  Use of best equipment: Taking Lessons from last year, I will be using whatever best equipment I can get my hands on. Quality is my main aim. If  I don't have good picture or sound quality , assuming looking from an audience perspective I would loose interest in a grainy video myself. Get a better know-how of the environment: In order to get comfortable while shooting and make the people I will be recording comfortable, I spend a whole day just seeing around and talking to them. Its never a great idea to...

Genre Research : Observational Documentaries

Image
Research: Inspired by the powerful immediacy of actual combat footage and the emergence of Italian neorealism toward the end of the war, Hollywood feature films began absorbing the influence of documentary. The development of portable 16mm cameras and synch-sound equipment brought significant changes to documentary film practice. Filmmakers now gained the ability to shoot with relative ease on location. The new light weight and portability of cameras that before had been bulky and heavy meant that they no longer had to be the center of prefilmic events, but could follow events as they happened. Filmmakers could enter a situation directly, without having to alter events because of technological limitations, as had been the case with, for example, Flaherty's camera in igloos. The tripod was abandoned, and the camera gained a new mobility carried on the shoulder of the operator as filmmakers began to...

Research Analysis: Imkaan

Image
Imkaan Welfare  I mkaan is a Nonprofit Organization, which was founded in 2012, by Tahera Hasan. Amongst the ongoing crisis of infants either being found dead or left abandoned, The Edhi Foundation revealed a National Statistical Report ;890 infant bodies were recovered in 2008, this number rose to 999 in 2009 and 1,210 in 2010. It concluded that in 2011, 70 dead infants were reportedly found in the city of Karachi alone. That is when Imkaan came into being, and sought to address the issue and take responsibility for bringing down the infant death rates and child abandonment. Their organisation is known for taking a holistic approach when it comes to treating the children, as in ,it is not restricted to merely serving food, giving a place to sleep . Imkaan has a mission statement,  “ No child’s life shall be curtailed by the circumstances of his or her birth because each one deserves absolute love and infinite opportunity to grow”. So in order to a...

Lip Sync | Assignment #2

Lip Sync a song to another Footage Task : One to Two minute Video The students will film a song and lip synching it, matching their lips to the lyrics of a song in the editing process. Directions Students will select a musical number to lip sync, they are encouraged to pick a classic song in which the lyrics can be understood.   Student should then act out the song in different locations matching their lips to the lyrics in the video.  It is important to have different types of camera shots in the video and it should  be properly edited. In this assignment we had to take any footage from an asian genre and sync an English song with it. So I took two different videos and songs and synced them with each other , according to their genre, style and mood. Below are the links to both of the videos: https://youtu.be/Ipeqzp9ldoE https://youtu.be/WZAePsRRRI8

Story (Pitch)

Image
Documentary being covered upon : Imkaan(NGO) Imkaan The documentary I shall be making individually for this component is inspired by the many wonderful people we usually tend to forget about, who exist amongst us. They are those individuals who aspire to contribute to the society without having any benefits for themselves , and there are also those individuals who one day grow up to do justice with the acts that led them to lead their lives respectfully and proudly.  The documentary will follow up on the lives of the owner of a local NGO as well as one of the many children who live there. I’ll also focus on 2 major roles of the NGO, that are Sehat Ghar & Khel. This NGO is different from amongst the mainstream way of working and provides them for whatever necessities the child in today’s era may require. It takes a Holistic approach when it comes to education & nourishment. The genre of the documentary will be observational and interactive , as I will be...
